Deltares Clarifier Project: Centrifuge Modelling of Peat Embankments

Deltares’ Geo-Centrifuge is used for testing physical scale models of geotechnical engineering systems such as natural and man made slopes, earth retaining structures and foundations.

By increasing earth gravity, real stresses can be scaled down to models and for natural processes in soil time can be accelerated and brought back from decades to hours. The facility is also used for scientific research in the energy, urban, water and transport infrastructure sector.

Through our First Call for Proposals, the Clarifier Project was launched and recently completed. The project aims to better understand the behaviour of peat landscapes and how we can find smarter, more sustainable solutions to build on peat embankments. Conducting experiments at the Deltares Geo-Centrifuge facility allowed researchers to model soil structures with the stresses that would be experienced on the real-scale.

The video below shows the Clarifier project from the First Call for Proposals.

GEOLAB invites you to participate in the Second Call for Proposals and apply for the free use of our facilities.

The deadline for proposals is October 16th, 2022, 23.59 CET.
